NTV and Bukedde 1 TV were the most watched television stations in Uganda in 2017.

This is according to latest findings released by GeoPoll; a top ‘surveying platform in Africa, Asia and Middle East with a database of over 300 million users.’

The report covering the 12 months of 2017 and January 2018 looks at “peak evening hours including news segments, when a majority of TV viewers are watching, notably including males and higher socio-economic” personalities. It shows “average television audiences per 30 minutes averaged across the 6pm-10pm (18.00-22.00) peak time across all days countrywide for the past 13 months.

According to these GeoPoll findings, NTV bossed and outclassed all its competitors throughout 2017, with an average monthly peak time audience of 1,219,167 viewers. It was most watched in March with 1.7 million viewers and least watched in July with about 0.9 million viewers.

Bukedde TV 1 was a distant second with an average monthly audience of 666,917 viewers. Its 2017 peak came in March with 868,000 viewers and was least watched in July with 565,000 viewers.

In the third slot was Next Media’s NBS TV as it attained an average monthly viewership of 472,167. Its best and worst months were also March and July with 628,000 and 380,000 viewers respectively.

Even though number 3 is by all means a good slot, several NBS TV fans will with no doubt be unhappy with this position considering their company’s massive investment in the past 3 years, coupled with aggressive marketing. In 2017 alone, NBS TV invested huge sums of money on equipment, improved staff remuneration, brand positioning and content promotion. All this has been done with a major objective of becoming the Television market leader.

Rest of the market

Bukedde TV 2, TV West, UBC TV, Urban TV and Spark followed closely with each posting average monthly audience of between 150,000 and 260,000 viewers.

That said, however, even though this survey focused on only 10 TV Stations, Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) data indicates that Uganda has 28 free-to-air TV stations and some 258 radio stations. The TV stations not mentioned by this report were categorized as others.

The others section, including BBS Terefayina, ABS TV, Magic TV, Star TV, Delta, Kwese Free Sports and Salt TV etc, collectively performed better than all the other stations minus NTV.

The others’ monthly average stood at 773,750 viewers. In November 2017, they registered their highest number of viewers at 986,000 while March was their worst month with a collective audience of 277,000 viewers altogether.

Cumulatively, these GeoPoll findings indicate that television in Uganda was watched by some 58,894,333 viewers throughout 2017, with a monthly audience average of 4,530,333.
