Director Mira Nair reveals why he had to adapt “Queen of Katwe” into a film after making a documentary

Director Mira Nair decided to adapt “Queen of Katwe” into
a film after making a documentary about the life of the man
who trained Phiona Mutesi, Robert Katende.The documentary was  about A young girl from Uganda who was trained to become a world chess champion.

Mira Nair reveals that this was more than just a documentary and that’s why he decided to make a movie out of it to inspire the whole world. The film will be produced by Walt Disney Pictures and ESPN Films, and will be released at an unspecified date in 2016.

Principal photography began in March 2015 and wrapped in
July of that year. The film was shot entirely in South Africa and Uganda.
